Spotlight On…Martha Eve

Artist Profile

Martha Eve Pale Faced Moon IMG 4768

Earlier this year I had the great pleasure of discovering Martha Eve via the release of her debut single ‘Cold‘. Carrying a heavy dose of Soulful Pop and injected with an effortlessly smooth Jazz undertone the track melted in my ears and made me an instant fan of this brand new artist. I had never been so excited about a new artist than I had at this point. Something within the beautifully arranged track told me that this Brighton based songwriter is capable of writing outstanding songs. After the singles release Martha headed out to perfrom her music across festivals and venues, all the while nurturing her talent and keeping me on my toes for her next release. It took a while but then last month she dropped her follow up track ‘Pale Faced Moon‘. Once again I was in love with her music and by now certain that she was something special. So I thought it was about time I learned a little bit more about Martha and what makes her music so rich and a delight to listen to.

So, lets get to know Martha Eve a little bit better……

Q: Could you give me a brief history of your road into music?

A: I’ve been obsessed with the way music makes me feel for as long as I can remember. I always wanted to be a ‘pop star’ as a kid. I started learning the guitar when I was 11, and sang along to covers. Playing gigs in the village pub at 14 gave me the confidence to write my own music. I don’t particularly know what my exact path was into music, nothing was planned, music just kept creeping back in and it stuck around, and now I get to share what I create with the world and there really is nothing better.
Q: Who were your main influences in the early days and have they changed up to now?
A: I grew up listening to my Dads music on my little purple iPod. Shuffle would take you from The Wombats to Estelle. I fell in love with Amy Winehouse’s beutiful soul sound and honest lyrics. I’ve been obsessed with Corinne Bailey Rae since I can remember. I listen to a range of artists now, such as Eloise, Kate Bollinger, Faye Webster, Nick Hakim, Dijon, Cleo Sol, Rachel Chinouriri and so many more.
Q: When writing and releasing songs what is your favourite part of the process?
A: Writing and recording the songs, when it’s all fresh in your head, you can still feel the words you wrote. It’s so exciting bringing something I’m excited about to my producer and chatting about what we should do with it, then hearing it come together. I love finally sharing it with my friends and family and seeing how proud my best friend and parents are.
Q: What part does your head in?
A: I’ve only released two songs so far, so it’s still pretty exciting and most of it I enjoy. The admin can be a bit confusing, there’s so much to do, so much is expected of you. Despite this, I know it’s my project, my music and there are no rules, as long as I’m trying my best to get it to the people that will love it, that’s good enough for me.
Q: What inspired you to write Pale Faced Moon?
A: Pale faced moon is a reminder that we are all just little ‘specks’ pondering around the earth, with our own problems, our own worries. Trying to figure out this thing called life. The world seems so big out there sometimes, yet you can still feel so lonely. Written during lockdown in my second-year uni room, I wanted to remind myself that it’s okay to feel lonely. Although life throws things at you at the most unexpected times, you still have control of your mind and you can go away for a moment if you like. I hope this song takes you somewhere nice.
Q: What do you have in the works?
A: I’ve been working on a project for a while now and it will finally be out in the world. Lots of shows, hopefully travelling around to new places and writing more. I have so much I want to do and I’m very excited for the next year ahead.

Favourite artist/band?
Kate Bollinger
Guitly Pleasure artist/band?
Mcfly <3 icons

I think it was the Sugababes! I was brought up at festivals though so I definitely saw lots of amazing artists/bands before but I just can’t remember!
If you could perform with anyone who would it be?
The beautiful Amy Winehouse
If you hadn’t done music what do you think you’d be doing right now?
I would be making stuff, maybe doing textiles or designing, I’m happiest when I create. Or maybe I’d just be in a nice warm country living in a tiny house (one day).
Can you give us one fun fact about yourself?
I get obsessed with little hobbies for a while, then find something new, I just love learning new things but I think I want to learn/do too much. Music is the one thing that’s really stuck.
So there we go. hopefully you’ve gotten to know this incredible singer/songwriter a little bit better.
