Northeast England has over the years thrown into our lives some exceptional talent. From Dier Straits to Cheryl Cole, to The Futureheads, Kenickie and more recently, Sam Fender, to name a few. So on July 6th this year, another band threw down the gauntlet and declared itself to the world….Kickin’ Lilies.
“….we’d always sort of done music at school, and me and James wanted to put something together band wise, but it took us a good, 4, 5 years to really find something that fit, and get to that point….” Morgan Punton
In late 2018, Ethan Burford (Guitar), Cameron Henderson (Drums), James Boak (Vocals), Morgan Punton (Guitar), and Kyle Stoops (Bass), came together to form something new that would in short order take the Sunderland music scene by storm.
“….we were sort of formed as a supergroup, you’d got me and James who were in a band called Fracas, and then a few mates from Laurens Court and Rhythm, Wood & Shape joined us and we just started jamming together….” Morgan
With this range of influences from each of their backgrounds the band began to work on and decide the direction of the band.
“….James had always been into bands like Clash, Sex Pistols, so quite punky, while I sort of pull influence from everyone like Slipknot, Royal Blood, and even Bombay Bicycle Club, so we all sort of vary….”
“….I was raised up on your 80’s hair metal, so being in this band gave me chance to sort of get a bit harder with lead breaks and stuff….” Ethan
Fully embracing their new Alt-Rock approach the band began to perform across their home town of Sunderland, even supporting The Pale White at a sold out show that featured an audience of 350 people. No surprise, it wasn’t long before the ventured out, performing gigs in both Newcastle and Middlesborough.
“….I think last year we must have been gigging at least once a week, sometimes twice….we even got the chance to play Shields, which was great….” Morgan
After experiencing the live scene in full force and earning the title ‘A must see band in 2020’, Kickin’ Lilies took their energy and passion into the studio and began work on their debut single.“….the plan was to release a few singles over the next two years, and help us build a following before dropping an EP or even an album….we’d recorded ‘All These Bad Dreams’ around December January time and had planned to lay down a few more in March, but then we couldn’t….so now the single is a kind of hook to let people know what we’re all about and hopefully get them interested in more….” Morgan
Like many bands effected by the lockdowns across the country, Kickin’ Lilies have had to put on hold any plans to record new tracks and have also had to slow down on booking gigs to tour their new single. However, making the most of their downtime, the band haven’t slowed down when it comes to planning for the future.
“….we’ve sort of been working on changing up the set, to make it a bit more interesting for us, and coming up with some new material, but really we’re just looking forward to getting back out there and gigging again….” Morgan
So for now all we can do is absorb their latest musical offering ‘All These Bad Dreams’, bask in its punchy and poignant message and hope that it won’t be too long before this young, up and coming five piece from the Northeast can begin to tear the roof off venues up and down the country.
