Nothing has lit a fire beneath musicians more, than when their entire industry was dismissed with a few simple words “….you should retrain and get other jobs…” The moment this statement went viral a new attitude and even solidarity blossomed with the industry across the board. Though it has been held in the eyes of many not involved in music that to be part of the industry is not a ‘Real Job’ it was never so openly undermined in public as it was at that moment.

For a lot of singer/songwriters this statement gave them a target to aim all their frustration and anger at the dismissive way their industry is viewed. One such artist used the current Lockdown to work through these frustrations and produce a track that is both unapologetic and honest. Better Jobs takes aim at the pressure felt by musicians. Coventry based YNES moulds a crunchy post-punk sound with an all out rock and roll attitude to create a song that packs a punch.

From its very opening line, Better Jobs doesn’t hold back from exposing the hypocrisy and insane standards we hold for each other. It pulls the plaster off about the true reality of a workplace, especially for female workers with the line “….wear a tie, actually I’m a woman so it’ll have to be a miniskirt….” This one line exposes the still prevalent stereotypes that woman face in a workplace. Doing this it highlights how freeing being part of the music industry is. As in complete contradiction to this expectation of woman at work, YNES is free to dress and act as she sees fit.

The song also makes a point of using the line “….retrain me , teach me how to be a morally upstanding member of society….” Highlighting the view point that being a musician isn’t a socially accepted job. With its beautifully tongue in cheek delivery the line punches a hole through this belief and perfectly balances with the points made about how immoral certain jobs are that are held in society as ‘acceptable’. For example she points out about how maybe she should get a job voting behind closed doors and thinking that’s okay and even slips in a dig about expense receipts, remember that?

Overall this track is an anthem for all those musicians that have felt trampled by a society that wants to benefit from everything music does for them but holds no comprehension of the hard work and all consuming effort that goes into that finished three minute track.
