Gloriously unapologetic and a gut punch for anyone who has ever uttered the phrase ‘he’s not rude, just, assertive’. Once again Coventry’s rising star YNES has managed to effortlessly create a song that takes her spark of talent and ignites a raging fire of raw emotion and upfront lyrics. The Daily Male is just everything I love about YNES’s songwriting and attitude towards the sort of artist she wants to be. There is no hiding behind fancy production or sugar coating lyrics for the faint hearted. What you hear is what you get and I’m hear to listen.

Much like her more recent releases God’s Little Punching Bag and Fake What Your Moma Gave Ya, The Daily Male sees YNES leaning towards a more Indie Pop feel while still maintaining that raw punkish attitude that makes her stand out from the crowd. Think Kate Nash meets Courtney Barnnett while on a pub crawl in Manchester. She has managed to create a very grounded and real take on the theme of calling out Misogynistic behaviour. From her vocal delivery that drips with ‘try and tell me I’m wrong’ attitude to the sucker punch of the songs arrangement, once again YNES has crafted a song to be proud of.

The open fluidity of picked guitar pattern combined with a bright and solid sound is almost like a sly smile before the song opens its mouth. Instantly I love the snap of the cow bell as the drums kick in with the vocal line and song takes a from grip of your head, still baring that knowing smile. All this then builds to the anthem that is the chorus that I can already imagine reverberating around venues up and down the country. “….Come on, come on, read the daily male, if the headlines don’t grab you, someone else will….” Such a simple and yet cutting hook. In one sentence YNES calls out this that participate in the problem and those that push its agenda while at the same time proudly holding a match up to the whole thing.

Overall The Daily Male is song that holds a mirror up to society and gets you questioning your own actions in certain situations. With lyrics that call out excuses made that sustain the damage ‘….He’s just one of the lads….he’s never had to learn when to shut up….” This song is one will reach a lot of people and hopefully give them the strength to say, ‘Actually mate, fuck off’. I love it when YNES drops new music and I’m very excited to see where her passion and love rolling up her sleeves and getting stuck in will take her music next.
