It’s very fair to say that over the last several years national pride and trust in our government is, well, at an all time low (putting nicely). As the bar seems to sink lower and lower with what our government considers helpful and beneficial choices, its easy to start to feel a bit jaded and itching for a change. Well, in the midst of this tornado of time one band have carved out their own option and evolved it into a track that captures not only the mood of a nation but also lends a level headedness to the argument for all out change.

‘Fool Britania’ îs a driving SKA/Reggae infused anthem for those in the centre of everything. Rather than a track filed with anarchy and anger, The Undercover Hippy have instead taken a more reasoned approach to their political output. Rather than calling for the burning of the current system, they call for acceptance and rational thinking. “…I’m up for taking back control, but baby you know, the story you’re sold, isn’t what you get at all…..” This brilliant set of lyrics really speak to peoples tendency to hear what they want to hear and think its the answer without looking into the details of things.

This sentiment is something that runs through the heart of the track with multiple references to implore people to stop taking things at face value and to ask the right questions, not the ones we think we should be asking, or have been made to think we should be asking. Combined with the laid back, yet impactful stabs of the music and hypnotic rhythms of the beat the humble messaging of this track floats effortless from the song into your consciousness. The whole tack just feels like it sneaks in through the back door of your brain and dusts off the more reasonable parts of it and gets you to look at things just a little bit different. All the while toeing the line between the new trend of ‘Left or Right’. You just do you, but think about it before you do.

Overall for me Undercover Hippy have created a track that speaks to me more than any raging punk song or social ballad has ever done. It gives a voice to those musicians and fans who feel that society and the world isn’t as simple as Left or Right, that feel answers lie in the grey, and whilesometimes they can be hard to see, they shouldn’t be dismissed as wrong. Plus it has the greatest opening line of any song i’ve heard so far “….I bet you’d never thought you’d regret a BJ….” Not only does it make you smile, its gets you hooked in, making sure your listening to what comes next.
