This Burning Age are a band that have spent countless years reviewing, improving, and perfecting their own, unique style. Blending together elements of Electronica with the hard edge of Metal the band compliment their sound with the application of a Gothic shadow that lurks in the background. From their early albums and EP’s fans have eagerly awaited their releases to hear what would be next from this ever evolving band.
So when their next project, Elastic Heart was announced curiosity was peaked.
“….we’d not done that many covers over the years, but we had been thinking about it, just to try something different….”
So the band took Sia’s hypnotic single, Elastic Heart, and made it completely their own.
When covering a song, many bands fall into the trap of taking the original, switching clean guitars for distorted, or switching the genre but keep the structure and the style, and label it ‘a new take’ on the original song. Knowing this, and being a huge fan of both Sia and the song, This Burning Age used their wealth of experience to create a genuine ‘new take’ on the single.
“….it was great to drill down to the bones of the song, and examine each aspect, not just take the main riff and build on that, but to really try and keep the soul of the song, while at the same time embodying it in something that was pure us….”
By taking the whole song from its bright Major routes and dipping them into a pool of Minor waters, the band keep the popping nature of the song while at the same time creating that Gothic Atmosphere prevalent in their back catalogue. They also slightly distort the lead vocals, in complete contrast with the original, but in keeping with, you guessed it, their sound.
More obvious changes are the addition of a heavier, slightly distorted bass line and the addition of a heavy synth and guitar towards the tail end of the song, creating that Metal punch that the band are known for. However, despite all this elements, the band manage to keep the pure message of the song and re capture the raw emotion with which Sia recorded the original, all thanks to singer Friday’s passion.
Overall this song will manage to have you thinking you were listening to an original piece from This Burning Age and pays a true compliment to the original song. It is a piece that has been three years in the making due to technical aspects of its brilliant music video but has frankly been worth the wait. This Burning Age show once again that no matter the challenge, they can, and will rise to meet it.
