Crunchy, punchy, and electrical are three owords that can go someway to summing up this new release from London based Alt-rockers The Kid and I. As soon as the guitar kicks in with a shabby driving motion I was cast back to late nineties early noughties grunge, the likes of early Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, and Soundgarden. ‘Fade Away’ is full of crunchy distortion and submerged distorted effects that really give the tack life and give it a real, rough around the edges feel. Instead of detracting from their music though, this more rough and ready feel adds a charm and a coating of nostalgia to it that will have you head banging along as the song kicks into high gear.

Each instrument is given its time and space to breath creating a wide reaching sound that still maintains a tight rhythm to it. The compliment both guitars pay to each other through the use of a light, almost fluid effect on one while letting the other one ring out raw, really gives the song a feel of texture and keeps you interested. Though the song doesn’t venture too far away from the typical song structure the two guitars and their altered sounds engage you to the point that you don’t even notice that you’ve already reached the end of the song. 

Driving the track from the moment it kicks in is the rhythm section. Together the drums and bass act like a persistent engine, maintaining the songs drive and balance throughout. One thing I might have liked to hear was more of a solid punch from this element of the track that could have given the track as a whole a heavy impact. However I think at the same time it would have lost its rough, grunge edge if too much production had been applied. Either way there is a solid foundation for the track that does a great job holding it all together. 

Overall ‘Fade Away’ is another great offering from The Kid and I and really lays the ground work for their projects to come. They feel comfortable in their sound and musical direction and have a great raw element to their sound that helps them to stand out amongst other bands, while still appealing to fans of Alt Rock and Grunge. I’d really urge you to give it a listen if you want a contemporary piece of fuzz wrapped in a warm Seattle Sound blanket. Very much look forward  to what will coming bursting out of them next.
