The Kecks
On April 23rd 2020 The Kecks, a Hamburg based band that have roots in Germany, Australia, and Britain, intend to recreate the passion of Indie Rock in the 00’s following in the footsteps of The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, and many more from that golden age of Indie Rock. With the release of their single ‘Modern Girls’ they want to announce that Indie is still here and sounds just as good as It did back then.

From the opening notes of the guitar to the moment the vocals kick in you are gripped by a nostalgic feeling. Yet this Anglo-German band have managed to coat their own flavour on to the genre. Whether in the brilliant use of fluid guitar effects that give the song motion, or their great use of layering throughout the song, this band make something so familiar and yet so brand new.
Alongside this upbeat background the song carries a powerful message on the state of modern pressure as a result of social media, with a focus on female presentation on such platforms as Instagram and Twitter. The band themselves describe it here in their own words.
“In a time when it’s easy to point fingers and laugh at the way society and culture are being twisted in the ‘Instagram Age’ we wanted to dive a little deeper and try to understand and sympathise with just how difficult it must be to grow up in the modern age, especially for girls with the constant pressure and complexities modern life brings with it”
The way in which they have embraced this very real situation in such a mature and straight forward manor shows the bands faith in the song and its message. They also avoided the urge to dress it up in shock lyrics and fancy guitar work that sometimes detract from a song trying to get a serious message across. This mature understanding of their material is evident in the final lyric of the chorus ‘….All you modern girls, have everything wrapped up in smiles….’ To add emphasis to the meaning of this line, the singer seems to take a somber, almost sympathetic tone when delivering it. As though he is trying to say, ‘we know everything is not always okay, but thats fine.
Overall this song leaves you expecting big things from this up and coming band. Hopefully they will ignite another wave love for Indie rock within the mainstream. Sadly due to recent events across the world they have had to suspend a tour that would have come off the back of the release of this single but they plan to back out gigging as soon as is safe to do so. So watch this space and lets hope to hear more soon from The Kecks.
