The Deep Blue

Regret, a powerful and mostly negative emotion that every single person has experienced. From not speaking when you wished you had, to simply picking the safer option when ordering a Holiday Coffee this ‘R’ word is part of life. Long lasting or short term the main thing we have to blame for the feeling of ‘Regret’ is our own confidence. The confidence to take the chance and speak up or the confidence to choose the unknown over the familiar. So when penning what is now their third single Manchesters The Deep Blue reflected on their own experiences and produced the rich tapestry of sound ‘Inside My Head’.

From the moment the all female pop/folk group dropped their debut single ‘Jealous Sea’ they announced themselves as something a bit different. Their sound is so subtle and delicate while at the same time being broad and imposing. Think Boy & Bear meets Bonnie Reitt in a café owned by Mumford & Sons. A bit of a stretch metaphor wise but for me that speaks to The Deep Blue’s unique sound. With the use of clean guitars and stand out rhythm sections they effortlessly toe the line between low-fi pop and contemporary folk. Throw into the mix harmonies that wrap around your eardrums like silk and they’ve definitely developed a winning format.

When it comes to the subject matter of ‘Inside My Head’ the band have perfectly matched theme with sound and through their lyrics they paint a vivd picture of the back and forth you go through when looking back on regrets. They even emphasise certain portions of the lyrics through a great use of delayed harmonies to create a call and response, alsmot echoing the frustration of going over the same point again and again. They also use stabs on the drums and bass on the line “….It’s taking forever to fight…” almost creating a ‘enough is enough’ moment. Its just a pleasure to listen to the nuances and passion in the whole song.

Overall with this latest single The Deep Blue have proven themselves capable of creating a rich and textured sound that can be enjoyed by anyone at any time. Its relatable theme and their less is more attitude with instruments shine throughout the track. As this is only there third single I can only imagine the sonic heights this creative and passionate group can achieve.
