The Bonnie Doons

With a combination of West Coast soul, big town funk, and an edging of old school Hip Hop, Australian based groove rockers, The Bonnie Doons create an EP full of style, substance, and a heavy does of flare. From its opening track ‘The Betweeners’ to the closing number, and most recent single, ‘Fred’, each track carries its own unique energy.

A stand out aspect of the EP is the brilliant, and ever changing guitar work throughout each track. Utilising the notable sound of a clean electric guitar, the songs are given an edge through the different ways in which the chords are played. Whether its the distinctive sound of the scratch and stab motion remoniscent of funk music everywhere, or the clockwork stabs of the reggae style down beat. Each guitar part is used to drive the song forwards.

To add to its energy and intensity, during the few solos, especially on the final track ‘Fred’, their guitarist employs a Wah pedal with a slight fuzz creating a raw and cutting sound against the background of the steady and true rhythm section. Though the guitar seems to guide the song, its the drums and bass that really give it some weight and act as the engine of each piece. Effortlessly complimenting each other the bass and drum sections weave between each other and come together at the right moments to tickle the spine of any funk loving listener.

As well as the well structured and addictive music, the vocal delivery by The Bonnie Doons is the icing on the cake for the EP. Delivered as a mix of funk soul crooning and free flowing hip hop each song is given the personal touch by the singer and each melody feels natural and organic, as though the words were born as the arrangement was played. With lyrics referencing everything from longing, romance, and being true to ones self, the messaging the band tries to promote is wide ranging and very accessible. However when presented in the manor that they have, its enjoyable too. More of a conversation between friends than strangers.

Overall, the band have created something that can be listened to at any moment and has the power to whisk you back to days in the sunshine and parties that went on long into the night. Its a great EP that will fit nicely into anyones music library.
