Leaving home. A stage in life that occurs for so many around the world. Whether its leaving for your first holiday on your own, moving to a new city for university, or just simply moving away to become more independent the emotions are all the same. A nervous excitement, fear, and also that dawning realisation of just how much are parents did for us. Reflecting on her own experience of moving away at a young age, Manchester based singer/songwriter Tay Temple has produced a touching homage to the experience in her latest single, Train.

Combining a country/folk rhythm with her trademark storytelling writing Tay has produced a track that finds a warm and cosy spot in your heart. Much like her previous singles, Train puts the emphasis on a prominent acoustic guitar and brings Tays lyrics into main focus. This style of composition is slowly becoming a hallmark of Tay’s songwriting and seems to be be getting stronger with each release. Behind these elements she weaves a steady drum line that lays the track for the song and utilises a very blues and country electric guitar line that seems to emphasise its theme of traveling into the wider world.

Lyrically the song is tackled in stages, almost mirroring the journey of a train as it passes through stations on its line. In the first instance the song has a focus on the initial feelings of nerves and anxiety that can come with moving away from home. “….Never have I felt so lost….do the tracks become familiar…” Two lines taken from the opening verse that highlight the fear you can have of being alone in unfamiliar territory and the hope that the feeling won’t last forever, that you will soon settle and feel more comfortable.

Then as the first full chorus kicks in it becomes a message of comfort to those left behind. ”….I’ll be home before the train goes again….” This line seems to speak to the message that no matter where I go, I’ll always come back home, as long as there is a home to come back to. As the second verse kicks in the song takes on a more profound nature, speaking to the safety we feel when at our first home but then finding that feeling is finally settling in. “….the boiling water burns my skin….but the pain seems easier to bear….” A line that captures the sentiment of finding yourself adapting to your new environment and making it a home.

Overall the track is again another example of Tays passionate and mature songwriting ability. It is a track that will easily nestle itself into that part of you that still remembers the day you first left the comfort of home and also the day that your new path felt like home. It is a track that has once again come from the heart in a very sincere way and is all the more emotive because of it.
