Taxi With Strangers

Making the most of yourtime, a concept familiar to many people, especially during this current time of uncertainty and anxiety. Do we watch the clock? Do we put a hold on plans for the future? Do we make the most of things? All these are questions asked constantly by every person on the planet, and are now the subject of Lancashire based, Indie Pop trio, Taxi With Strangers latest single.

Pulling on inspirations such as The Strokes and more recent bands like Catfish and the Bottlemen, Taxi With Strangers weave a steadily paced and upbeat rhythm into a track that carries across their poignant message nicely.

“Time is a song about living life to the fullest, not overthinking about the future and embracing the moment.”

Immediately their intentions behind the song are made clear with lyrics like “….Woke up from a fortnights sleep, about an hour ago….” and “….We’ll stare at clocks on the wall, until time stands still….” the band are already highlighting how much time we can waste inside our own heads. This is compounded by the line “….But when the dawn wakes up we’ll know exactly what to do….” Seeming to reference peoples tendency to put things off until tomorrow.

Building on this, the song moves forwards, not so much giving advice, but again highlighting other things that can cause a person to resign themselves to a sedentary lifestyle. Whether its a reference of a bustling city, or the choruses reference to peoples aim to fly, the band make the point that things come much easier if we stay calm and tackle things as they come.

Speaking to the musical vessel in which this message is floated upon, the song does, in my opinion, something clever with the drums. Aswell as starting the song with a steady, uncomplicated drum beat, brilliantly performed by Toby Wetherill , a small syncopated drum diddle is performed on the rim of the snare, giving the impression of seconds ticking on a clock. Whether purposefully added, or just a happy coincidence, the layering of this sound, adds to the songs underlying message and overall theme.

Over this anchoring rhythm, an echoing guitar and fluid bass line are implemented, again, brilliantly performed by Jake Bellamy, and David Morton-Jones respectively. Each element that is introduced ties in neatly and adds to the overall atmospheric, and easy feel to the song. Topping it all off are the confident and well delivered vocals of David Morton-Jones, who uses a mix of straight forward singing, combined with occasional off beat delivery to create his own unique vocal line.

Overall this single showcases all three musicians very positively and shows the huge potential for them moving forwards. Definitely one to be added to any playlist. It may also make you think twice before putting things off and instead get you take each moment and live it fully.
