Honesty, a sentiment that is both something that can cause great joy but also great pain. Whether its an admission to enjoying your friends latest attempt at songwriting, or admitting to yourself that you need to make a change, honesty is something that seems so easy but can carry a lot of weight. Fully embracing all angles of honesty Newcastle singer/songwriter Sophia has used her own blend of electro pop to create Stay, a song that takes a deep dive into the internal struggle you can face when at the cross roads of change.

As soon as the song kicks in with a a mix of restrained synth and guitar the song immediately creates a forward momentum. By using the restrained element within the first verse, it almost mirrors exactly that feeling of bottling the emotion you can face when trying to express yourself honestly but at the same time, fearing the result. This level of mirroring emotion within the music can also be heard as the chorus kicks in. The music swells, joined by more synths and a wider beat pattern, as though the emotion has been released. lyrically the song becomes more honest too. While during the verse it feels more of a ‘What If?’ Moment the chorus carries a more honest message. “….God I think I love you….” An admission to the truth behind the internal struggle..

Then the verse kicks back in to create what could be considered the other side of the conversation shown through lyrics like “….Overthinking, doesn’t change much….” Speaking to how, no matter how much you think things through you can’t really ignore the truth of a situation and sometimes it’s better to just be honest and deal with the reality. This sentiment is something that is weaved into the atmosphere of the track and is painted with some brilliant use of imagery. “….I can see it dancing on the floor in front of you….” and “….Dancing in the dark won’t shield the view….” Two powerful images that speak to the fact that you can’t ignore how your feeling, you can try but it will always find a way of being seen and heard.

Overall Stay is another step forward in Sophias songwriting journey. While her previous releases had leant themselves to more of a alternative pop sounding quality, Stay has the feel of a more contemporary electro pop classic along the lines of Halsey and Anne Marie. Given the subject matter the composition does so much to elevate the deeper meaning of the lyrics and really showcases Sophias talent for writing mature and poignant songs. You can only wonder now what path her music will take next.
