Do you remember a time when indie was Brit Pop? When every boy and his dog wanted an Epiphone guitar or at least a sibling to form a band with? A time when lyrical content was just abstract references to getting high and living life on the edge? You know, the 90’s. Well, Coventry Alt Indie quartet SENSES have look back and captured the energy and vibe of this milestone in British music in their latest single Drifting.

Capturing the electricity of the time when indie was on the rise and having a colt following was considered a badge of honour the band create an entire soundscape that plays like a musical wormhole in your head. Even if you didn’t grow up during this time, or missed the core revolution by just listening to this track you are picked up and placed into the eye of the indie storm. Pulling on influences such as Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, Ian Brown, and many, many more. The blend samples of all the key elements that made their music great and mould them into an audible memorial.

From the use of crunchy, grits filled guitars, to the overlaying of futuristic synth effects, the band build the track on the back of a passion for their own genre. With each listen more elements jump out at you and you almost take a visual trip through the music, as though witnessing its formation in front of your eyes. Its almost like a grand unveiling, as though you stand awe struck in front of a technicolour stage as the future is locked into place before you. This sort of futuristic feeling and almost other worldly feel is kicked off through the use of two famous quotes from two big Colt movies of the 90”s Babylon 5 and Strange Days.

Apart from these two quotes that kick the song off, lyrically the band have adopted a minimalist feel and use merely a handful of words to skate across the musical landscape. By doing this they once again capture a core element of early 90’s indie as a lot of tracks would merely carry a verse and chorus that would repeat, while the music swam around them. This tactic has been well executed in SENSES release so much so that you could almost believe that it was released during the peak of the Brit Pop movement in the mid 90’s.

Overall Drifting is a track that is both full of nostalgia and an uplifting vision for the future of the indie genre. By celebrating the roots of what inspires SENSES in their own songwriting they have been able to create something that is both a throwback and also a glimpse into their future sound. Again, blending elements of old school with the modern the band have forged a colt classic that is  timeless and proves the still growing popularity of this considerably recent genre.
