Leaking Drains
Scrounge
Amidst the chaos of 2020 and the ongoing Covid crisis it is easy to forget about the underlying issues still effecting a large portion of the UK. Though we live in a so called ‘wealthy and advanced nation’ we still see a rise in poverty stricken communities and an unchanging homelessness issue. However there are still people out there fighting for these issues to be seen and heard. Scrounge, a post-punk fuelled duo from London are lending their music to the cause.
Despite the track only lasting for over a minute, Leaking Drains is an all out throat punch and unapologetic railing against a society that allows these issues to go unchanged. Combining fuzz filled and crunchy guitars with an elastic snap of a drum line the track immediately grips you and doesn’t release the pressure. Its drop kick attitude is reminiscent of Sex pistols, Clash, and more recently bands like Johnny Foreigner and Million Dead. Despite it being only guitar and drums the track carries the weight of a full line up and doesn’t skimp on the intensity.
Vocally the band use a familiar short sharp delivery that again, ramps up the intense, fierce nature of the track. Each line is boarding on a rage out, perfectly matching the style. Within the lyrics the track openly exposes its message of highlighting the themes of poverty and social pressure. “….Shifting through the shit for a hot tip….” Starkly comments on how people are forced to do things they don’t want, just to survive or move forwards. The song has a running theme of how much pressure is placed on us as a society but also how we are told to get on with it and do what we want. “….Underwater, fill my lungs, till can’t tell my legs from the sea bed….” Again a very visual metaphor of how you can simultaneously feel overwhelming pressure but be expected to bare it and be fine. The result being self sacrifice to survive.
Overall Leaking Drains is an unapologetic punk outcry for the downtrodden. Its a song full of frustration and passion that doesn’t dance into your ears but kicks the door in and then puts the windows through from the inside. With recent events across society the hope is that this passion and fire can be bottled to launch the band into a slew of impassioned tracks that will truly capture the mood of the people surrounding them.
