Honey Sauce
Redwood
Seeking closure is a concept so familiar but at the same time a concept so difficult to achieve meaningfully. Its a sensation that can creep up on you and even strike you out of the blue. This is what happened to West Midlands and Wales based singer/songwriter, Redwood.
“I wrote ‘Honey Sauce’ after the end of a relationship which only lasted a few months….”
However as time moved on she began to realise that old sensation of needing closure begin to absorb her. So armed with a heedful of questions, an desire to set her feelings free, and a talent for songwriting, Redwood weaved her inner most thoughts into the framework of her latest single.
Much like her previous single, ‘Radio’, ‘Honey Sauce’ dances on both sides of the line that separate Indie Pop from Neo Soul. Opening with the gentle picking of a clean guitar the song slowly lulls you into its opening. Soon after Redwoods distinctive and rich vocal fills the space, again adding to that Neo Soul feeling. However just as you are settling in the song takes a turn into slow build more akin to an Indie anthem. A transition that does everything to elevate the song to allow its force to bleed through. The song then continues to effortlessly transition between these elements of the song.
Lyrically once again Redwood displays her talent for capturing her mood and emotions and projecting them in simple and effective ways. Through lyrics such as “….I’ve been deciphering riddles, but it drains me so….” And “….I wish you’d get up and move out of my mind….” Go a long way towards giving you a glimpse into the urgent passion felt by Redwood as she penned these words. Combining these lyrics at certain moments in the songs rhythmical changes really brings emphasis to the vocal delivery and brings weight to their delivery.
Overall, this second release of 2020 from this talented multi instrumentalist and confident songwriter shows a lot of promise moving forwards. Not only is she able to harness her feelings and emotions to be used a fuel for her writing flames but she also has a grasp on using song structure to accentuate certain elements of her songs. Redwood is definately a musician commenting herself on to the music scene.
