Indie, a form of music that over the years has inspired no end of musicians to pick up the guitar and perform their hearts out. Whether it’s bands following in the footsteps of Brit Pop pioneers such as Oasis or Blur, or those adopting the sound of the more contemporary Indie upstarts like Arctic Monkeys, The Wombats. Each band has taken their inspiration and ran with it. With their sophomore single, Something To Do, Birmingham based Indie/Rock quartet, Five 0 Five’s have drawn on their eclectic inspirations and used them to great effect.

Something To Do, much like their debut track Through The Darkness is the encapsulation of the thoughts and feelings of the next generation. Whereas Through The Darkness took a more reflective look at life after University and the struggles you can face moving forwards. Something To Do flips the mood and creates an upbeat look at how sometimes the simple things than lift your spirits but may not always look so appealing the morning after.

Musically the song draws on the sounds of The Spin Doctors and Reef with its groove driven chord progression, performed by vocalist, Alice Bloor. This creates and gives the track a very fluid and easy feel. This is then capitalised on through the use of some fancy finger work from Andrew Mouzouride on the lead guitar. Each note dances between the pattern of the rhythm guitar creating a full range of movement in the music. Behind this and steadily moving the track forwards is the combination of Nico Pickard and Joel Faulkner on bass and drums respectively. The two combining to complete the Indie Groove.

Above it all Alice’s vocal performance is delivered in the same easy and relaxed manor as the music she is playing. Each line is dropped neatly into the song and is swept up in the upbeat atmosphere. Lines like “….We drink to forget….” and “….In this moment I can’t hear a sound….” speak to the escapism people can find in just hanging out and having a wild night with your mates. Then add to that a line like “….Left me black and blue….” The song highlights the downside to partying a bit too hard.

Overall this track is a strong second single from the up and coming band and clearly showcases their intent to carve their own path through the Indie music scene. It also highlights that despite their youth the band have a maturity to their music that should help them to write some stand out songs as they continue to write and grow as a band. So, apologise for doing this but it has to be done, if you’re looking for ‘Something to do’, see what I did there….
