Nanuk

Over the last few decades there have only been a handful of artists who have managed, armed only with their voice and a guitar, to create songs that would quiet stadiums with their raw emotion and naked power. From Colin Hay to Peter Gabrielle, these artists have wrapped their well crafted words in gentle and often minimalist sounds. Now, in 2020, a hard working musician from Nottingham in the East Midlands, UK is taking up the torch and is following the path only tread by a few.

Nanuk’s second single, The Family Song, is a prime example of how a songwriter can channel raw and honest emotion through nothing but an acoustic guitar. Utilising a bright and warm sound, Nanuk finger picks each note that makes the body of the song. With each rolling note the song begins to take on the feeling of gentle movement and blends perfectly with the strong delivery of Nanuk’s vocals. Each line is delivered with a humble passion that mirrors the warmth and comfort of the guitar playing.

This feeling of warmth and comfort seems to embody the sentiment and message behind the song,  ‘….I will love you till the day I die….’ A simple line but one that is used effectively within the song. As a whole the song tells the realistic story of a long term, yet loving relationship that is still filled with passion and care. With lines like ‘….I’m not the perfect husband….’ And ‘….Put a few pounds on lately….’ Nanuk doesn’t shy away from the reality of his material. Instead he creates a love song that goes beyond romance and travels into the realms of unconditional feelings.

Overall, once again Nanuk has delivered a strong and powerful song that captures your emotions and weaves a tale that many listening will either relate to, or would aspire to. At the end of the day what a lot of us are looking for is that one person to whom we can love, trust, and build a family with.
