Sometimes with these reviews it can be very difficult to put my thoughts and feelings about a song into sentences that, well, make sense. There is just something about that songs that evoke a feeling that is so natural and pure that you can’t quite place your own figure on it, let a lone explain to someone else. ‘Joanna’ is one of these songs. Through an infusion of Jazz, blues, and a voice so authentically soul, Brighton based singer/songwriter Nadia Moon has created a track as smooth as marble and as captivating as twilight.

From the moment the song kicks in with a warm solo guitar you immediately sink into its rhythm and momentum. Through a combination of finger playing and palm muting that lone guitar fills your mind as though its the only thing in your world. I know that sounds a tad dramatic but like I said, this is one of those songs that is so hard to describe the pure nature of it, I’m going to have to do what I can. Anyway, back to the song. At this point after two rounds of the opening chords the guitar is joined by the subtle yet perfectly placed percussion and then Nadia herself pours her voice into the composition with so much ease and control.

Each note is pitched at the right time, drops at the right time. Each line delivered with poise and purpose creating a song that feels alive, as though it is forming for the first time as you listen. Rather than feeling and sounding like someone singing words that long ago lost their initial spark. Nadia’s delivery is full of subtle emotion and rich texture, perfectly mirroring the composition weaving around her. Then to top it all off the seemingly simplistic nature of the arrangement is one of its most positive points. In allowing Nadia’s voice to be the star the song reaches a whole new level on the ‘that, was amazing’ meter.

Within the heart of the song, and is almost the cherry on top, is the relatable lyrical content. Though you’d associate that jazzy feeling with songs of heartbreak or romance, Nadia has channeled the feelings of regret you get after being talked into a night out despite just wanting to take it easy. We’ve all been there. “….A drink in each hand, cause your mouth feels like sand….” A great image that is oh so familiar to me. Listening to the track, you can almost picture yourself in a movie scene, waking up the morning after and thinking “Why the hell did I do that”.

Overall, with this being the second release from her upcoming EP, I can only imagine the musical magic awaiting us once the entire body of work drops. By combining her compositions with very relatable themes and lyrics Nadia is definitely a songwriter with staying power.
