Wear your heart on your sleeve, don’t hold anything back, just a few sentiments often found at the heart of many love songs….but how real is this sentiment? Why not create mystery, retain something of yourself, while still loving someone whole heartedly. Well, for those people this latest single by the excellent poet turned songwriter, Michael Jones, could be your anthem.

From the opening line of ‘Melts Away’, ‘….Hold something back, from the ones you love the most….’, Michael makes it clear that this is no normal, rose tinted track. With a combination of poetic imagery and the steady roll of Country guitar he creates a song that is rooted in reality and an experienced, if not bitter sweet view of putting yourself on the line. Whether its romantic or plutonic, the song has the ability to speak in multiple ways.

‘….Love needs a little intrigue….’ and ‘….Some diamonds never shine out in the sun….’ two lines that fully encapsulate Michaels message of ‘don’t be so quick to give it all away.’ This message is and his feeling on the subject come through clear with the tracks title line ….The magic, melts away….’ With their delivery you get the voice of experience, someone who has thought, felt, and dealt with these situations. Being a poet, Michael has managed to craft this raw sentiments into a reserved but compassionate statement. ‘Its okay to want to take things slowly, to think things over.’

Adding this poetic framework on top of a simple and effective country guitar pattern, you can almost visualise the sprawling countryside, the figures staring distantly as the sun sets, the dusty roads, and screen doors in the hot afternoon sun. Visuals helped by the way in which Michael uses his experience as a poet to find the perfect imagery to get his point home, while still keeping it raw and relatable.

Overall this is a brilliant example of what I would dub, Country Poetry. Blending an optimistic, yet bitter sweet message to an expansive and long reaching sound, Michael Jones has once again create an award winning song, that can speak to each and everyone of us, romantic at heart or not. So lets hope for Michael, that the magic, never melts away.
