EP Review

Finally released from the shadows is the blistering debut EP from Liverpool Alt-Rock heavyweights Mexican Dogs. Showcasing their love of all things gritty and rock ’n’ roll this EP is a great taste of what this passionate and determined set of musicians can achieve. Channeling the likes of Black Keys, Royal Blood, and T-Rex, Mexican Dogs have crafted a body of wrk full of electricity and packed with glorious rough edges.

From the moment the opening blues infused riff of ‘She Cries Blues’ to the driving 80’s fuzz of ‘Run Run Run’ each track instantly hooks you with its tasty and catchy guitar work which is then backed up with a solid and fleshed out rhythm section. Through the use of splashing symbols, rolling bass notes and fast licks their musical ability shines through with each note. The guitars are full of a rich fuzz that leaves no gaps in between the chords, this is really noticeable on ‘You & I’ which is on of the more slower, if you can call it that, songs out of the four tracks that make up the EP. However through the use of the fuzz and the splashy drums it creates a huge lift for the chorus and a full heavy thrum during its verses. Honestly its just great fun to listen to.

Vocally, all I can say is that it compliments the music brilliantly. The almost delicate yet sharp vocal line that bites into each track really adds to the versatile nature of the band and allows them to explore the various avenues of their style without worry. For me Gaz Wilcox’s voice hits such a sweet spot for me and reminds me of artists such as Mark Bowlen and My Morning Jacket. Especially on the tracks ‘You & I’ and ‘Run Run Run’ which really let Gaz release the accelerator on his voice and create some stand out vocal lines. Couple this with the addition of a fun effect on each word and it again doubles down on their rough and ready vibe.

Overall ‘Mexican Dogs’ is the kind of debut EP that will cement the band into the consciousness of all those that listen to it. It packs a neat little punch that’ll leave you spinning for hours after listening to it. Now that they’ve announced themselves and proven their ability to be consistent through a body of work I can only hope it isn’t too long before we are graced with a follow up or even a full length album. It’d be great to see how this bands sound evolves over the next few years and hopefully you’ll join me on the ride.
