During this pandemic musicians have faced no amount of upheaval and set backs. Whether through the suspension of live shows, or the limiting of opportunities to record in full studio settings. Despite these set backs however, music has still found a way to reach people. Many artists have embraced the DIY style of recording and production, to varying degrees of success. Well, this latest single from London based artist Lucy Mair, is a DIY success story.
Named for the year it was written, Lucy has taken a song, long lost in her back catalogue and crafted it into a beautifully atmospheric piece. Coming in at just over 2 minutes in length, 2016 fills your senses and cushions you from the world. It pulls you into a landscape of harmonies, reminiscent of early soul and even bordering on old Folk, when songs were sung without instruments, when words would create worlds. Combining these two genre elements creates something magical, making you want to hear more, even as the harmonies fade away.
Lyrically the song speaks to feeling at a loss, not knowing in which direction you should take now. A sentiment that despite being written four years ago, is very much relatable now. Lucy’s delivery, her gentle voice, making full use of her range, again adds to that feeling of Soul, pure soul. She also brings an elevation to the song with the use of multi layered harmonies to create the background, and only really adds a gentle but pulsing bass note to bring emphasis to the closing of the track.
Overall, I could speak on and on about the magic of this song, about the pureness of the composition and arrangement, but quite frankly, hearing it will be the only way to truly understand the quality of this track. Quality made all the more impressive as it is self produced, self recorded, and self composed. Its a great track and a brilliant example of how despite everything, music will always find a way to reach you.
