Picture this. You’re sat flicking through old photographs, bathing in the memories they hold. As you go through them you pause. You’d forgot about this one, you’d forgotten about the person in it. As you take in the grinning young faces staring back at you a wave of nostalgia hits you for a simpler time and an old friend. A friend who was seemingly always there, who you can’t help but look at with rose tinted glasses. As your memories begin to roll out a gentle acoustic guitar swims into your ears carrying the ghost of a piano. The voice that then follows it, delicate and yet sharp launches you down memory lane in the most bitter sweet way….

All that was triggered in me by merely listening to the opening few seconds of this stunningly beautiful release from Lexie Carroll.

‘Racing Raindrops’ is the second single from Lexie and is another teasing taste of her debut EP set for release later this year. As I stated in my opening monologue the track is one rich with nostalgia and even richer in tone and texture. From its eloquently picked guitar to the smooth layered vocal the whole track becomes an extension of its own themes and imagery. As the song is brought in with Lexies gentle, almost embracing voice the track grips a part fo you and doesn’t let go. Even as the track moves forwards her voice pulls you along like a familiar friend guiding you down a path you think you recognise.

This image of familiarity and friendship that is felt in the song is brought about I feel through the theme and intent of the lyrics. Each line is laced in a bitter sweet coating as Lexie reminisces on her time spent with a close friend, someone she cared greatly for. However, rather than get lost in profound statements and overly mature imagery, Lexie grounds the song effortlessly by delivering one simple word into the equation “….Your stupid face….” The addition of ‘Stupid’ rather than sweet, kind, or another more blissful statement, Lexie allows you to feel like that younger self again.

Overall, Lexie Carroll is not only a shining example of the young talent emerging in the UK but has also created a track filled with wisdom and a reality that even more mature writers haven’t achieve yet. The way in which she sculpts the music with her voice and still allows herself to have a bit of fun while writing is something that can only set her in great standing moving forwards. With a quality pair of singles behind her, I can honestly say that I am eagerly anticipating an EP bursting with warmth.
