Hypnotic rhythms combined with lyrics that speak to a familiar feeling are two elements that Brooklyn based Rap/R’n’B artist Jovian uses to create his latest offering. ‘Better’ is a song for all those who feel at the fringes of society and have to tolerate friends and partners who think they are hiding their reservations but in actual fact are displaying them like a beacon. At the same time it also speaks to the insecurity of being in a relationship with someone you may feel is better than you in some way, and again, how they try to hide it, but fail while doing so.

Carried on the flow of a synth and guitar based composition, the song is pulled forwards by a steady drum and bass line, reminiscent of old school R’n’B from the 90’s. The music feels like it lights up before you, taking on a shimmering quality which allows Jovian’s confident vocal line to nestle in and present his message. Delivering lines such as ‘….You like him better….’ and ‘….Your not so clever….’. He embodies the message of the song, ‘You may not think I notice you drifting but I do’. Also, he refers to himself in the lyrics as ‘….This tortured poet….’ Which is typically a metaphor or symbol for an ‘outsider’, again tying into the feeling of the track.

This imagery of a person struggling to deal with the noticeable change in a relationship, and feeling of being placed outside of what was comfortable, contrasts with the upbeat and positive sound of the music and adds another layer to this messaging. As if to say, ‘Despite this situation being a bit negative, I’m not going to let it take me under’, a point focused on again as the song breaks into a middle eight where Jovian seems to take the power back in the conversation through a rapped verse.

Overall the track is an easy listen that can speak to a range of listeners while also giving you that nostalgic feeling for summers in your teenage years. Well worth a listen and also the video goes hand in hand nicely with the track by creating positive imagery along with scenes that reinforce that feeling of being pushed out or ignored.
