Contradiction, frustration, and powerlessness, all feelings that in recent months have spread throughout society and all feelings that are captured in the latest single from singer/songwriter Jim Hudson. After dropping ‘In Windows’ earlier this year, a song that dealt with the nature of social media and a growing lack of privacy, ‘Bones’ takes a stark look at the current social climate and paints a powerful picture.
Opening at full pace, the surging drums, and rolling guitar combine to create a song that moves in one direction, forwards. Rather than pulling back at times, the song layers more punch with the use of a sweeping synth and an electric guitar set to that classic indie crunch. From start to finish the music drives the song forwards, capturing you in its wake. Then as it moves on the unique voice of Jim Hudson himself delivers the lyrical message of the track.
‘….The king lives, your defender, by slight of hand….’ This line, sang early on in the song already gives an idea to the sentiment that binds the song together. The image of the one in charge using deception to stay on top, an image that grows ever more relatable as time moves on, speaks to powerlessness of people that all we can do is watch, know what is happening, but be able to do nothing about it.
Another great line comes further on, ‘….Leads us into fire, wrapped in paper….’ Again a line that speaks to powerlessness but also contradiction. You may follow them, but have they done enough to prepare you for what is to come. The song uses many other examples of imagery to drive home its point, almost creating a play like structure with each verse becoming its own act, tackling its own view on the meaning of the song. While all the while, sticking to its 90’s Indie sound inspired by bands like Oasis and Radiohead.
Overall, ‘Bones’ is another great offering from this Midlands based singer/songwriter, and proves that with his songs he is aiming to reach out to those who feel the same and allow them to know that they are not alone. One can only look forward to what will come next from this talented songwriter.
