Atmospheric and raw are two perfect descriptions of this latest release from Edinburgh native, Jack Hinks. Known across Scotland and the UK, Jack’s latest single Los Angeles comes in the wake of his previous release Retail – an ode to the working creative. Talking about this new release and what inspired him to write it Jack says.
Los Angeles is an exploration of society and sustainability. During my first time in the United States, I was baffled by the sheer scale of everything around me. I felt somehow alienated and alone in one of the world’s largest cultural and creative epicentres. The global pandemic and halt to industry have left me wondering how the world will grieve or celebrate what we usually take for granted, but also how we will lay the foundations for a more conscious and sustainable future given the opportunity. This then gained an added depth, considering the latest wave of protests and activism against racism and systemic injustice.”
Considering the weighty message of the song, Jack manages to bring a delicacy sometimes lacking in modern acoustic based music. Following in the footsteps of such acoustic legends as Roy Harper, Nick Drake, and The Incredible String Band. Jack strips everything back to its bare bones and allows the music to paint you a vivid picture.
The merest concession to accompaniment is presented through the use of a lone violin, performed beautifully by Fiona Liddell, and the use of Jack’s own voice to create the illusion of percussion. Also to compliment his gentle tone, Jack harmonises with a female vocal, again performed by Fiona, which blends neatly into the background, seeming to add yet more layers to the atmosphere stirred up by the reflective melody line.
Even the guitar, the instrument that leads the track from start to finish is overflowing with warmth and carries an almost timid tone which gives the impression that it is merely there to carry the message, rather than be the one to grab your attention. This allows, like everything else that has been carefully layered and thought out in this track, the vocal and the message it carries to be heard clearly and concisely.
Overall, Los Angeles is a brilliant example of how amidst the noise and chaos in the world, a well crafted and atmospherically driven song can be heard loud and clear. It is not only a pleasure to listen to but it is a song that makes you pause, close your eyes, and truly get a moments peace from the world around you.
