The Emperor

There can be nothing more stirring and lonely than the the sigh of a trumpet. In just a few notes this single instrument can capture an emotion very few words can express clearly. Its bright and yet forlorn character can change the feel of any song. So it will come as no surprise when I say that in tackling the next stage in his ‘Stages of Grief’ project, Scotland’s genre bending chameleon Jack Hinks employed the use of the trumpet to outstanding effect. The result being a song that not only carries Jacks unique songwriting ability, but is the perfect marriage of theme and composition. 

‘The Emperor’ is the fourth single from this project and is possibly the one most relatable for me and many others. Digging deep into his own personal struggles the track carries an overwhelming edge of sincerity but also humble intent. This track is not there to be an ‘It’s tough but it’ll get bet- ter’ type song, but instead starkly lays out the quagmire that is depression and how it can sneak up on you without realising it. For me this is perfectly captured in the composition. Through a mix of gently picked clean guitar, clear and atmospheric synth notes, and the minimalist notes strung together by the lone trumpet, the track coasts in without warning and grips you for its entire run. 

Even lyrically the song reflects on the creeping nature of depression. Taking on a reflective aspect from the beginning the song acts as a ‘How did I not see it’. As in, now that you’re in the midst of its clutches, how were you able to deny it for so long. From descriptions of ‘Growing Pains’ as a metaphor for the feelings of youth to a reflection of watching your efforts come to nothing or spin out of your own control, Jack creates a humble mirror for anyone to gaze into. I could break down each lyric and direct each note but quite honestly this is a track that will truly stir something dif- ferent within each listener. 

Overall ‘The Emperor’ is a song that is minimal in construction but layered in its intent. It’s a song that carries a humble and reflective tone that at the same time manages to be raw and unforgiv- ing. This quality, this ability to achieve a multi-layered meaning while not compromising on the songs integrity is one of the main reasons I get a rush of excitement when his name appears in my inbox. I can only look forward to what he will achieve when he approaches what is next.
