“….Its my life, its not my illness….” Alexandra ‘Ali’ Hirsz (Vocal, Bass)
Rain in Our Eyes is the latest EP from Cambridge based three piece, Idealistics. Coming off the back of their recent single Here Come the Zebras this latest offering was hotly anticipated by fans of this up and coming Indie band.
From the social commentary of its opening track Scandalous, which focuses on our fears of being honest online, to the heart on the sleeve lyrics of Take Your Words Back, a song that calls for the listener to challenge certain stereotypes constructed by society, this EP will take you through a range of emotions from hope to despair and everything inbetween.
This journey is made all the more powerful when you realise that this is a songwriter opening their heart to the world and not holding anything back. As the opening quote suggests two songs on this EP in particular focus on the struggle and personal view of singer Ali’s experience with having a rare form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This means that each time Ali picks up her bass or a guitar she is at risk of doing damage to herself due to a severe weakness in her connective tissues throughout her body.
Despite this however, along with the support of her family and fellow band mates, Dominique Hirsz (Drums) and George Gillott (Vocals, Guitar) Ali has taken what many would view as a weakness or in her own words “….A rock dragging behind me….” and embraced the complications and hard work head on, steaming forwards with her dream. This raw emotion is evident through out each song in both the music and her vocals.
Also just as much passion is shown by George Gillott who on Illegal Love takes the vocal lead proving the slew of talents that runs through these three young Cambridgeshire rockers. Another example of their collaborative talents is on Timeless Goodbyes. They create a gentle and yet powerful ballad while at the same time make great use of their harmonies during the chorus. This takes their song crafting to another level, proving they are capable of more than just being ‘another’ Indie Rock band.
The most incredible track though on this EP is the final track My Rules. As well as the quoted lyrics at the top of this review, the song is an open letter to Ali’s thoughts and feelings on what she and those around her go through in connection to her illness. Again the song shows her making it her strength moving forwards. It is clear she has a point to make and this song makes that point. Yes she has an illness, yes life is more complicated, but no, that doesn’t mean she isn’t just as capable as anyone else on the music circuit.
Overall this EP shows how the band have come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years since their debut EP Grades in Ignorance. From an upscaling in production quality to the exploration of new sounds and structures that help them to create something different. Idealistics have definitely found their corner of the music world and from the sounds of it are planning on making themselves comfortable. Time will only tell how much better this ambitious trio will get, but one thing is crystal clear…Nothing, will hold them back.
