Exploding onto the UK music scene with their first release Sitting Duck, London based Alt Rock firecrackers Holding Poison return with their eagerly anticipated second single, Losing Grip. In keeping with their first single the band have once again took a long hard look inwards and then held it against the current state of society, creating a track that encapsulates a generation left behind.
Taking inspiration from their own experiences as part of a generation sold hollow promises and an ever shrinking pool of opportunities the band combine their gritty edge with a more mainstream sound to be a voice for as many people as possible. The lyrics don’t shy away from the Grimm reality that a lot of young people face. “….Suck it up….” A familiar phrase thrown in the face of any young person who dares to question, well, anything. The song continues to question and challenge the expectations and reality of society from their own personal point of view.
Musically the song pulls on influences from early Foo Fighters, Feeder, and even Ash to create a grungy, melodic riff driven track. Combining the use of male and female vocals, Holding Poison use it to great effect to emphasise certain lyrics and make things stand out throughout the track. During the verses the band drop back leaving a minimal sound to allow the vocal to breath and get its message across with ease. The whole composition makes great use of light and shade to create the foundations of the song and allow the chorus to punch through and stand out against the backdrop.
Overall Holding Poison are steadily shaping their sound and by tweaking their approach towards a more mainstream sound they prove their versatile nature and don’t fall into the trap of constant fast riffs and arm aching drum beats. Instead they craft a good song that can appeal to a wide audience. Big things can be expected from this band moving forwards and so far they have proven that they are ready to mix things up to try and get the most out of their own music.
