Atmospheric, fluid, and stadium ready are three ways to describe the latest release from UK based Alt Indie star, Graywave. Combining the gentle yet powerful tones of her vocal delivery with a crunch and gritty guitar driven framework, Graywave takes a step forwards in the evolution of her own unique sound. Compared to previous single With Me, Like Heaven takes a step onto the darker side of Graywave’s sound and exposes the heart of a promising songwriter.

As the song kicks in you are treated by  the fade in of a guitar that laps against your ears, pulling your attention towards the entrance of the vocal line. With a use of echo and reverb it creates a moving sound that ripples with each note, bringing an almost organic quality to the music. Slowly building the song seamlessly crashes down on you as the main chorus kicks in. Its sound rises with the addition of of a full band at full, uninhibited force. Again its as though the song rises and crashes against you, enveloping you in its overpowering atmosphere.

The whole time, Graywave’s vocals skim the surface of the music, an anchor amongst the noise. Given that the themes of this song resonate with the struggle between those internal voices, or the ‘Devil and the Angel on your shoulder’, by mixing and producing the track the way it has, the contrast of the soft vocal against the driving guitar really adds a layer of realism to the songs theme. It can at times have the draw back of making it difficult to distinguish the lyrics, however for those who are fans of Alt Indie bands such as The Beths, Crush, and even Radiohead, this is a common trait of that genre.

The finished product personifies Graywaves intentions whole heartedly with every bar. As mentioned it has a very organic quality that wraps itself around you and tempts you to face your own inner voice. It also has that raw, bitting quality that helps it stand out among any playlist. Despite all these evolutions in her songwriting however, Graywave’s core remains, easily proving her ability to carve a new path while staying true to herself.

Overall the track is a statement of intent, a beacon to fans of Graywave’s new direction. It is also the lead single from her upcoming EP, ‘Planetary Shift’. So frankly, if this track is anything to go by we can expect 2021 to be a big year for Graywave, and the next step forward as she steadily carves out her own place in the spotlight.
