Capturing the pure essence of an emotion is something songwriters have attempted for centuries. From the upbeat joy of an explosive riff to the comforting hug of a gently played piano. Each artist, no matter the genre, has strived to cage their emotions within their songs. Brian Cox, the brand new single from London based singer/songwrtier, and KIN lead singer, GracieSouz is a great example of that musical mirroring of emotions.

Written as the UK was plunged into yet another national lockdown, Brian Cox is a raw and unapologetic exposure of the feeling of being alone. From its opening swell it evokes a sense of both nostalgia and also the future. As the swell reaches a crescendo; a lone guitar, trapped in a fluid shimmer of sound takes the lead and somehow makes you feel as though it is playing alone on the stage of an empty stadium. At this point GracieSouz’s distinct vocal kicks in with very down to earth lyrics that speak honestly to a feeling becoming so familiar to thousands across the country. “….I realised I felt lonely….”

Expanding on her sentiment the song opens up into the reason it is named, Brian Cox. “….I watched a lot of Brian Cox documentaries….” Though this may not be how everyone has spent this current lockdown, the following lines that are sung are inspired by this viewing and also are perfectly fitting for driving home the scope of emptiness that can sadly be felt by those alone at this time. “….Saw a blackhole and only felt empathy….” A powerful line that conjures up an equally powerful image.

It is at this point as the song moves forwards it grows and expands as you listen, almost creating a feeling of just how large the universe is in comparison to our own lives. Utilising a great use of fading in drums and pairing it with the distinct sound of bass notes on a piano the song lifts off and takes on a life of its own. Continuing there is a nice use of light and shade to allow certain portions of the track to stand out and again keep the portrait of an expanding universe in your mind.

Overall this track is both a frank and honest outpouring of raw emotion but also an optimistic message of solidarity to those feeling the same way. It speaks both to being trapped in throws of these feelings but also to our ability to overcome them and find a place where we belong in this world.
