There is nothing better than a short, sharp, stab of a song and the best place to find one one is in the explosive arena of British Punk. So when I came across this little nugget of nuclear punk in my inbox I hit play and scratched that itch. 101 is the debut single from new Punk three piece out fit Gas Künst. Even before the release of the track earlier this month the band had begun to create a musical personality to rival the legends in their field. In one instance they announced that upon their deaths they would be fired out of cannon across the desert. If this doesn’t give yo usome insight into the bands sound then hopefully the next bit will.

Embracing the beautifully simple and chaotic nature of Punk Gas Künst have released to the world a song that bites into like rusted nail. Both dark and energetic 101 breaks out of the speakers with a driving baseline and sharp symbol work that create an urgency that is mirrored by the brilliantly strained vocal line that wraps around the music and then breaks out of its cage as the main guitar line kicks in. Once together all three musicians drive forwards, burying the nail deeper and revelling in the frantic nature of the short track time. In barely just over a minute the song snaps closed living behind gritty echoes in your head and the relief that you put it on repeat. With each listen the song just drove deeper and deeper into me. I even allowed my thoughts to lumber forwards and take a shot in the dark with the songs title and the contents of the lyrics that hint towards bad things happening to innocent people being a reference to the fated ‘Room 101’ of the literary classic ‘1984’. 

Overall, I may have gone out of the other end of the rabbit hole in my comparison but it doesn’t takeaway from this solid debut. The song makes the statement that Gas Künst are here and are fully prepared to stick around. It’s got some great promise from its structure to the way that it feels like a three minute song, despite only being less than half that. I eagerly look forward to hearing their next bitesized release (emphasis on bite). So go check it out below and see what you think about it.
