Anger, an emotion that is very difficult to understand, let alone completely control. It can make the most innocent of us act like maniacs and drive the most intelligent into acts of stupidity. it’s an emotion that we all battle with in some shape or form and is also one of the key elements explored in the latest single from old school rock band, Galloper’s Green.
Ballad of the One Eyed Bastard presents us with the inner struggle of someone confronting the anger they hold as well as exploring other negative traits that seem to have an effect on the world around them. Rather than dismiss these elements as merely emotions that you’ve got to sort through and dispel, the song actually projects an acceptance of accepting these things as part of yourself and how in doing so they can be easier to control. It then also exposes the result of what can happen if you don’t accept and control these elements.
For example the song uses lyrics like “….Becoming that thing I never wanted to be, accepting that his is my prophecy….” Both highlights the acknowledgment of the negative while at the same time acknowledging that it was a choice to act that way. Then in the final verse of the song the lines “….Strapped down, last rights, alone in the end….” Speak to the consequences of not controlling the reaction and how letting it take over can only have a negative impact on the world around you. All the while each chorus highlights the struggle with and want to control the negative reaction “….Voices in my mind, I don’t want to hear them….”
Musically the song is pure rock. Hailing to sounds of Thin Lizzy, Free, and other raw rock bands of the 70’s and 80’s, Gallaher’s Green produce a very down to earth composition that embraces a traditional song format to great effect. With a live quality to the recording it gives the track an earthy feel that raises the enjoyment level of the song and doesn’t restrain the band from projecting themselves through their playing.
Overall this latest single is a brilliant teaser for what to expect on the release of their full length album, Lucky 13 due for release on 12th Febuary this year. Though a deep meaning can be read into the lyrics of this track it is also a track that can be put on and enjoyed at face value and make you feel like your back there at the bar enjoying some live music once again.
