Are You Ready Gaby K
‘…Its very much about being ready to commit and not wanting to beat around the bush…’ is how West Midlands based Gaby K, describes her latest single, Are you Ready.
Unlike her earlier singles, Lost and Don’t Say, Are you Ready Is a step towards a more R’n’B twist on her usual pop/soul material. This change however by no means limits Gaby’s talent for either singing or songwriting. Both these elements shine through from start to finish and are also elevated by the collaboration with London based producer Nosa, who has helped create a well produced and polished product.
As Gaby is an artist who proudly writes her own music and lyrics, this confidence in her own ability bleeds into her final product, so you truly get a sense of her own feelings in the words she sings. For example, her opening lyric ‘I don’t wanna fuck this up…’ makes it clear, not just through the word choice but also through the delivery, that Gaby is not going to sugarcoat anything. Instead, she wants to be as honest as she can with her lyrics.
Due to the passion with which this song was written and recorded, it is clear that Gaby has found herself in the situation of just wanting a simple answer to an important question and she hopes to give a voice to everyone else who feels the same.
The track itself follows the usual structure of many pop based R’n’B tracks, however it sticks to a minimalist approach when using synths and electronic effects, clearly an artist who believes that less is more. By doing this it allows Gaby’s talent to reach you unhindered. As a result you will find yourself humming the melody rather than the songs instrumental hook, that can sometimes draw attention away from an artists meaning.
On this track, the instruments are kept in the background allowing her vocal and harmonies to take the lead, controlling the pace and tone of the song. Towards the end, the track builds with the addition of a keyboard carrying a soft synth effect that compliments the bass line and drum pattern, creating a powerful ending to what started as a mellow song. In someways reflecting the frustration of the questioner as they search for that simple answer.
In closing, Are you ready? Is a great example of a Soul/R’n’B track and is definitely worth a listen, because in this uncertain world we live in now…aren’t we all just looking for a straight forward answer?
