Future Colours

Picture the scene. Iron grey clouds loom over a rising cliff face as the waves strike it from beneath. On its peak sits a lone drum kit. As the music swells the drummer takes his seat and punches through the gnetle atmosphere, paving the way for the driving guitars to push back against the waves. If you can picture that, you’ll get some sense of the atmosphere and power of the latest single from Scottish Indie band Future Colours. From its punchy beginning to its anthem closing, ‘Stopclocks’ again showcases the bands ability to embrace the atmosphere of their home and weave it into each note.

Following in the footsteps of fellow Scotts like, ‘Fatherson’, ‘Vukovi’, and to some extent ‘Twin Atlantic’, Future Colours effortlessly blend a rock indie edge with an atmospheric raw body. The immediately grabs your attention and holds it, never easing on its pace. Though the song consists of several moments of light and shade sonically it never compromises its intensity. Whether its as the whole band blast out the driving riff, or when a gentle guitar carries the vocal through the verses, each moment is steeped in atmosphere and passion.

Lyrically the atmosphere and intensity is channeled through the theme of appreciating each moment to its fullest, and wanting to hold on to each moment for as long as possible. This theme marries effortlessly with the expanse of the song and elevates the entire single to another level. With lyrics like “….There is safety in this silence….” and “….Telling each joke as if it was your last…” Future Colours capture both sides of the emotion of wanting moments to last. Be it the longing to allow a peaceful silence to last forever, or the more rational belief that it won’t so we must treat each time as our last. The band do well to bring more than one perspective into their lyrics.

Overall ‘Stopclocks’ is a brilliant follow up single after their debut earlier this year. They have definitely worked hard to create a unique sound and can only go upwards from here. With live shows slowly reviving themselves one thing for sure is that to witness this track live would be an experience to behold and we can only wait with high expectation for their next single to drop…hopefully it won’t be too long.
