Show Me The Way

‘Feeling alone in a crowd’. One of those phrases that tries to give words to something that is difficult to explain. Though as a society we have an idea of loneliness and depression, it is merely a surface understanding of the truly individual nature of these feelings that can still be hard to describe. Even trying to lay out the thought process of feeling out of control of ones own life choices can be difficult for most people to get their head around. So knowing this, London based singer/songwriter Deborah Williams took on the challenge of weaving her own inner monologue into her latest single.
Show Me The Way is a track that is both powerful and sincere in its composition. From its gentle synth opening to the driving sound of the rolling drums as the song kicks in the track does its best to be honest and at the same time comforting without being preachy. Each bar and lyric is a glimpse into Deborah’s own inner monologue as she openly explores the hopeless and powerless feeling you can face when you being to feel out of control in your own life. “….Lately, the sins they play on without me….” This line alone is a brilliant image of how you can feel out of control and can only watch as something negative unravels.
Despite the dark undertone of the verses in which she delves into the overwhelming nature of how easy it is for negativity to take hold, the choruses contrast by creating a hopeful outburst, or even a sense of light amongst the storm clouds. Just before it kicks in Deborah seems to tighten her grip on hope through the use of the lyrics “…I’m holding on with all my skin, and all my bones….” With this one line she is almost saying despite the negative feeling, I still know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The chorus kicks in then with the simple lyric “….Show me….” It then uses a layer vocal to create a powerful response and begins to list those things we crave in times of desperation. “….A light, a sign….” etc. It then ends with the sincere request to “….Show me the way….”
Overall both the lyrics and the musical landscape on which they rest merge seamlessly to create something that will reach out and rest a comforting hand upon your shoulder. It both acknowledges that way that you can feel in these moments and at the same time urges you to believe that you can take back control but it won’t be easy. It doesn’t promise blue skies, instead it urges you to embrace your feelings but rather than give into them it urges you to overcome them, no matter how difficult that may be. Only then can you truly feel in control.
