Dead Agents
Punchy, energetic, and poignant, three words that can sum up the latest single from Birmingham based Hard Rock band Dead Agents. Hard to Burn comes off the back of their self titled debut EP and their 2019 single Aimless Careless. Like both of these releases, Hard to Burn continues to show the growth and consistency of this band. From its driving riff that opens the track, to its thudding backline that push the band forwards the song leaves no room to take a breath and forces you to take notice from start to finish.
Overlapping the chugging guitars and dynamic drumming is an equally punchy message. David James-Foster, lead singer puts it best.
“Hard To Burn is a song about being burnt and torn down so many times that you can go no lower, having nothing left to lose, you become free to give everything you have to whatever you desire.”
This meaning is evident throughout the song in such lyrics as “…holding back from life that’s just begun…” and “Going down in flames…” Both these examples enforce the narrative of not holding back and just reaching for what you want, regardless of potential consequences.
Going back to the music behind the message, despite this being a perfect example of Hard Rock, it almost carries qualities of pop in its use of harmonies during the chorus that contrast really well with the hard edge of the guitar and lead vocal. This uniqueness can be seen elsewhere in the song to hold the interest of the listener. During the extended verses, the guitars change up the pattern of the thrumming chug by implementing stabs part way through. At one point they perform a riff carrying a distinctive effect that brings emphasis to the penultimate line of the verse “….Waiting for an answer? It’s not here….” By emphasising this line it could link back to the songs meaning in that you must seek answers for yourself, not wait for them to come to you.
These elements showcase that Dead Agents are comfortable in their genre and willing to experiment with ways of improving their sound.
Overall this song is a must listen for anyone who like their music to have teeth. Clearly there are big things to come from this band and if this single is any indication Dead Agents show no sign of slowing down and will keep burning up the UK music scene for years to come.
