Ready to Bite

Punchy, melodic, and graphic are three words that can someway to labelling the latest release from New Zealand singer/songwriter Danica Bryant. With all the groove of a pop song mixed with the grit of dirty guitars this proud Kiwi has created a sound akin to Halsey & No Doubt in a tag team match with Pink & Paramore. The end result being a track that both gets you moving and gets you raging.

The song opens with a bouncing drum and bass line that carries a somewhat shadowy edge to it. This edge is quickly thrown to the forefront as the guitar and vocals kick in. Both fit neatly into the songs momentum and Danica wastes no time in sinking her teeth into your ears. With the songs themes about the darker side of being in the limelight and the dangerous ways in which the media seem to have control over perceptions of people, Danica goes for the throat, lyrically and vocally. “….Hungry for more, spill your guts and I’ll eat till I’m sore….” Immediately she latches into society’s desperate need to know everything about everything that happens.

This uncompromising use of imagery continues throughout the track and only adds to the passion with which Danica performs the song. “….We don’t even cook, we Ian’t about the slow release….” Another line that nails peoples obsession with immediate gratification. I could happily type out the whole song like this as each line seems to be perfectly crafted to drive home Danica’s feelings on the subject. The one portion I do think is worth highlighting before moving on though is the bridge section towards the end of the song.

While the main song switches between an understated, almost restrained verse routine and a punchy, dirty, and explosive chorus, the bridge section switches gears and creates an almost etherial atmosphere. This change helps to elevate the repeated lyrics and give the listener a feeling of switching perspectives. “….The stairway to heaven is laid with good intentions, but even Gods have to open doors…..” In that moment, wrapped in the composition and the lyrics it is almost as though a voice of reason is doing its best to be heard. ‘Just because these people are held up on pedestals, it doesn’t mean they stop being people’. A powerful and obvious sentiment that has sadly been forgotten by many in todays world.

Overall this track has a wealth of texture and a frank honesty that attacks the heart of her theme, leaving no room for doubts. With renowned producer and fellow kIWI Simon Gooding, Danica has created a track that will get you moving and thinking, something not a lot of pop inspired songs can claim. Personally I’d get it streaming, whack on the headphones, and get your volume past eleven. You can thank me later.
