Capturing a feeling, a sentiment, in a song is something to which all musicians aspire. Whether it’s the feeling of uplifting joy at finding the love of your life or the heart wrenching pain of losing someone close, every artist does their best to pour every inch of themselves into every note, line, and rhythm. With her third release of the year, West Midlands based singer/songwriter Chloe Mogg has definitely achieved this level of personification.

‘Attack’, much like Chloe’s previous singles is rooted in her own personal feelings and experiences. However, this latest single dives deeper into the more mirky waters of coping with anxiety and even goes as far as to paint a picture of what suffering an anxiety attack can feel like. Within seconds of her unique melody kicks in she delivers the line “….I don’t care where we go, I’ll linger like your shadow, I decide how the night will go….” A powerful image and one very relatable to anyone who has suffered with anxiety.

After this we hear a line that is repeated a few times throughout the song :….I apologise in advance for the way I’m about to act….” This sentiment is again something that people who deal with or have suffered with Mental health problems in the past will nod along with. That feeling that we have to apologise for something that we have no control over, a feeling that Chloe really holds to the microscope in this song.

Moving away from the lyrical content, it is definitely worth mentioning, and praising the clever use of the musical element to the song. The instrumental element itself, even without the vocal line could be held up as an example of what an anxiety attack may sound like. The song fluctuates between big builds that suddenly drop into quieter moments which as the song moves forwards the builds grow in intensity adding in heavy rhythm and a cutting string section. Add to this Chloes use of a flange effect on the guitar, the whole thing creates a perfect musical canvas for Chloe to paint her lyrics onto and elevates her message to even firmer footing.

Overall, these words do not do justice to the intricacies of the track as a whole. Enveloping this raw and personal song in an Alternative Rock style akin to Radiohead’s ‘Moon Shaped Pool’ album, Chloe has created something relatable and multi layered in its output of her message. She is definitely an artist who considers every aspect of each song she writes.
