Ear CandyAnother Enigma
Ear Candy, the latest EP from Another Enigma could not be more aptly named. On these 6 tracks, the Coventry based producer crafts a landscape of sound that encourages a sense of calm intensity that carries through the entirety of the EP. Each track is subtly different and transports you audibly to a completely different space. The one constant however is the care and thought that is poured into each bar of music.
Inspired by such composers as, Nobuo Uematsu and Yoko Shimomura, who have worked on such games as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, Another Enigma presents an atmospheric tone within each of his compositions. From the atmospheric synths and the steady pulse of electronic drums of the opening track to the almost trance like rhythm of the final song, these influences can be felt throughout the EP.
In leu of a vocalist, Another Enigma employs the use of a synth pattern, famously used to create the line ‘Mr Blue Sky’ by ELO, to create a lyrical base. Despite it having no clear words that cut through, using this method allows you to place your own meaning into each note. The addition of this element raises the impact of the song from just being another atmospheric electro track, into something that carries a meaning behind the music. Like art however, it is subjective and the freedom that this production gives you to implant your own ideas on to the track is quite unique.
Rather than telling you something straight, Ear Candy invites you on a journey and allows you to immerse yourself in your own ideas of what is hidden in the song. It emotes an emotion which can differ from person to person. Where one might find joy in the steady pace of Keep On, another may hear a voice calling out of loneliness or despair, either way, you can’t be wrong.
Even the titles of each track, seemingly gives the merest hint about what to expect from the track. From its opener, All of Us, through to Dragons, and finally landing on Into the Sunset, each track is its own self contained concept but at the same time, could be drawn together in your own mind as a story of progression. Again this is evidence of the pure art of this blend of electro, atmospheric, and acoustic style of production. Its a concept, rather than a fixed idea. Put never the less does not detract from the sheer quality of the end product.
Overall Ear Candy takes you on a journey but you decide where it goes. Its a great listen to relax and unwind to, while at the same time it holds your attention and frees up your imagination. As production tools grow in quality and ease of access we can only imagine what sort of landscapes Another Enigma will paint before us next.
