A great song tells a good story. This phrase is something I’ve found to be very true in my years of listening to music. This isn’t to say songs that don’t tell a story aren’t good, but there is just something about a song that weaves a tale that sticks with me long after I’ve finished listening. Whether its the emotional journey, a relationships dissolve, or in one memorable case, a trip to the shop to make pancakes for a loved one having a crappy day the stories in these songs will vary massively between songs. Every now and again though an artist emerges who uses their songwriting to create a whole new world…

Nobody’s Wolf Child recently released not only their debut single but also you could argue the first chapter of an epic tale. ‘The Fall’ gives us the first glimpse into another world created through music. On the surface it feels like a stand out example of Alternative pop. Through its mix of swelling string sections, sweeping synths, and tribal drum patterns you get a real sense of the cinematic as you listen. Add to this the faint sounds of nature behind the vocal line you can almost imagine the wilderness growing up between the notes.

However, upon closer inspection and putting th song within the context of its artwork, the song is a heartbreaking tale of regret and loneliness. Even its opening lines “….The day I felt the fall, was the day I lost it all….” You immediately get sucked into the image of someone pondering their current situation. It’s almost as though they are looking out across a landscape and wondering, ‘How did I get here?’. Thinking like this means the nature sounds add even more to the texture of the song and the fact that the song makes great use of fading instruments in and out and letting the vocal line and harmonies take centre stage really pull you into the songs lament.

Then just as you think you’ve found a footing in this soundscape their is a subtle perspective shift where we get the lines “….The day I watched you falll….” At this moment your mind and imagination takes you to a whole new scene where the other side of the story is being told. It may be. My over active imagination but you can almost imagine the subject of this portion of the song gazing longingly at photograph or some sort of memorabilia from their past. Again, for a song to paint such a vivid picture with its soundscape is something not often accomplished. 

Overall, ‘The Fall’ is a song that sets Nobody’s Wolf Child up as an artist to watch going into 2022. As I said earlier the song acts as the opening chapter, or even the prologue to the story created by Nobody’s Wolf Child many years in the making. Its a track rich in texture and meaning but much like a wolf, behind its warm gentle exterior is a clenched jaw ready to snap. I am genuinely excited to hear the next chapter in the journey.
