Starrgazy

Musicians, a creative breed that have the ability to draw inspiration from things that most people may take for granted. From pulling on life experiences, to simply singing about an old car there isn’t anything that can’t inspire them. So when forming the bones of what would become their debut single indie dream pop duo Starrgazy pulled on their own surroundings to help capture their vision. Being based in Cornwall the duo didn’t find it difficult to find the inspiration they needed.

Much like Cornwall itself that is steeped in mythical tales and old Cornish Folklore, Starrgazy’s single ‘Flying’ is filled with etherial guitars and haunting, yet gentle vocals. From its opening strum the track swirls like a mist off the coast towards your ears and carries you in its wake as it creates an atmospheric dreamscape. Though the electric guitar takes the lead in the song, through the use of an equally etherial synth and the addition of an acoustic guitar the tracks chorus elevates itself almost like a piece of reality breaking through, reminding you that your listening to a song  and not dreaming.

The whole atmosphere is complimented by vocalist Lucie Hill. Through her gentle delivery and the subtle use of harmonies the vocals both cut through while at the same time becoming a guide as the track moves forwards. During the middle eight of the song Lucie’s vocals take on a haunting quality with the addition again of subtle effects on her vocal line that just keep elevating the overall composition and highlight the duos confidence and comfort with their own sound. It is worth noting that much like the soundscape of the track, lyrically the song examines our experience with reality and dreams and the potential of becoming lost in one or the other.

Overall ‘Flying’ is a great statement to make as a debut single. Not only does it highlight Starrgazy’s distinctive sound but it also gives us a glimpse at the small embers that will surely one day ignite and launch them into the wider music scene. Hopefully off the back of this release the duo will continue to write songs that are true to themselves and keep being inspired by their surroundings and experiences in greater and greater depth.
