Punchy and anthemic really sum up the latest release from electro indie rockers, Shader. After the success of their last single True To Life the band return with a bang and also a slight change in musical direction. While True To Life carried a more West Coast sound akin to bands like Jimmy Eat World and All Time Low. Runaway keeps things closer to home with a more UK indie rock vibe inspired by bands like The Wombats, Pigeon Detectives, and other bands from the late 00’s early 10’s. By doing this they’ve really created a track that has the potential to be a classic indie anthem.
From the moment you hit play the song hits the ground running and manages to keep up the tempo and energy throughout. Given the subject matter of the track it isn’t surprising that the band chose an uplifting and driving composition to spread their message. Initially the song highlights how in this age of reality show celebrity their is a desperate need to find a quick route to fleeting fame. However during the chorus the band urge you to forget about this desperation for a brief moment and simply enjoy your life. The title itself tells you this in no uncertain terms and combining this messaging with the punchy tempo of the track it grabs your attention and makes you want to run.
Lyrically swell the track does a great job art unapologetically highlighting their thoughts about the need to be reality show famous. With lines like “….Desperation is the enemy….” And “….There’s no real in reality…” the band take an open swing at both what drives people into the arms of reality shows and also spotlights the truth behind most reality shows. Then in the chorus that urges the listener to ‘runaway’, the band emphasise that it is never too late to getaway from the draw of these type of fame. “….We can runaway….” A simple line but one that highlights that no matter what, you always have the option to do or be something else.
Overall the track is one that fills your entire body with its sound and sends a complete and clear message. ‘The fame found through reality shows or that desperate need to be seen and celebrated doesn’t always mean it’s a good thing’ and sometimes when you feel trapped by the anxiety of needing to be someone you can always remove yourself from that path and run down a new one.
