Hautingly Cinematic perfectly captures the very essence of the second offering from Scottish based Dream pop duo, Gefahrgeist. Nukular gives us a brief, yet intense glimpse into the potential thoughts of the man behind the launch of a Nuclear weapon. Though for obvious reasons the duo would have had no first hand experience firing nuclear weapons, this hasn’t stopped them painting an ethereal soundscape that encapsulates the scope of emotions that would swirl through someone in that position.

Opening with a gentle solo piano accompanied by vocalist Fiona Liddell the song sets up its dystopian dream scape instantly. As the song moves forwards the piano builds with an almost Bond-esque style that carries you into the control room of the launch station and places you infront of that button. As each line is delivered the song creates the inner turmoil and almost self justification that could swirl through a persons mind at this point. It also does a respectful job of describing the eruption of the nuclear weapon without glorifying or exaggerating it for effect.

Musically, much like a nuclear explosion the song blooms into an expansive run during the later stages of the track and ripples outwards, absorbing you as a whole as you listen. It also makes great use of their trademark dream pop sound during the middle eight, creating an almost out of body experience, experience for the listener. So vivid is the picture painted by both the vocals and the music that it is easy to picture the imagery tastefully mulled over in the lyrics, elevated by the carefully put together structure of the song.

Overall the track is a strong follow up to their debut single Graceless and once again shows the duo’s ability to craft a mature and deeply meaningful song. Though the original material that the song is based on is not the most relatable, the sentiment behind the song, regret, guilt, and shared responsibility is one many people can relate to in many ways.
