Fantasy and preconception. Two elements of us as human beings that can be both positive and negative in equal doses. It is also the topic of the latest Alternative Pop track from Shropshire based singer/songwriter, Greysha. In her latest single Aspirin, Greysha takes back the power of how she is perceived and highlights the way people project their own idea of someones identity on to them. It also highlights the negative aspect of this, namely the way in which people don’t let go of that image and expect you to live up to their own idea rather than allowing you to be you.

Musically the song handles the message by wrapping it in a dark soul stirring atmosphere. From its opening that uses static Synth effects and a slight discorded guitar instantly creates an ominous atmosphere that quickly snaps into the main body of the song. As this happens the guitar keeps it’s shine but begins to play a more upbeat, yet still ominous chord pattern. The whole time it is accompanied by a steady electronic drum beat that unlike standard pop tracks carriers more of a punch to it.

Over this uniquely atmospheric landscape Greyshas vocals add the finishing touch to its haunting nature. Reminiscent of an almost Stefani-esque delivery, Greyshas vocals blend nicely with the rhythm of the track an take on an intense quality, especially noticeable during the bridge in which she openly address the way that we can be ‘Shackled’ to our fantasies of people. She also uses lyrics to describe the ways in which people attempt to live up to these fantasies. “….Take you out in disguise….” Is one of the more poignant lines referring to the songs overall message.

Overall this track is a great example of Alternative music and carries a very relatable message. We have all at one point in time assumed to know a person, or create a fantasy of one of our favourite celebrities if we ever met them. While most of us don’t ever get the chance to have this illusion shattered by reality, unfortunately a few take that fantasy too far, and for me, this song is a call to everyone suffering under this sort of pressure that it is okay to break out of it and embrace who you really are.
