Millennials
Lauren Bird
A love letter to a generation is the best way of describing the latest release from Indie/Folk songwriter, Lauren Bird. Embracing all the stereotypes of ‘Millennials’, the good and the bad, she creates a gentle, almost cherishing landscape for her listeners to travel along. From references to the frustration felt by many in this category, to highlighting the pressure felt to conform to traditional standards, this song speaks effortlessly to the soul of its audience.
Musically the song is driven by the use of a picked, clean electric guitar that rolls along, not pushing the song, but carrying it forwards. On top of this Lauren’s voice is resolute yet delicate as she delivers her first few lines, “…We’re lost, but we are lost together….but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one….” These two lines picked from the opening verse really set up the impression of solidarity that runs through out the track. Moving forwards the song seems to expand on this and almost open its arms , not just to other Millennials, but to anyone who feels the same pull to conform, despite their personal feelings.
As the song hits the chorus Lauren takes on the pressure of conformity head on and addresses it with an almost tongue in cheek attitude. “….It’s our fault for not buying houses….or settling for spouses….” Despite the delivery being similarly soft as before, there is an underlying edge that almost says, ‘Really? Because of these reasons we aren’t to be taken seriously’. It’s after this portion is sang for the first time that a bass drum elevates the song and adds an engine to it, lifting into a more forceful space. This is then filled out with the use of an echoed guitar that enhances the sense of forward motion.
Overall this track is not out to preach, not out to feed an agenda, but is simply out there to bring comfort and an open hand of greeting to everyone feeling the same way. ‘You are not alone, we are okay’. With this message weaved into the very fabric of the track it creates a worthy song that deserves your time.
