Blues collides head on with a jazz influenced frame work in this latest single from Edinburgh’s finest, Jack Hinks. Jigsaw is another example of the versatile nature of Jack’s musicianship and songwriting ability. While his previous release, Los Angeles took the listener down the path of acoustic folk reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s, Jigsaw go down a pure electric groove route of old school R ’n’ B.
This free flow approach to his guitar work and melody line in the song match effortlessly with the inspiration for his lyrics. Speaking to the human traits of self confidence, self growth, and acceptance in ones emotions, Jack couldn’t have picked a better style to work in. From its blues edged guitar notes, to the patter of the melody line the whole song combines into something reminiscent of 50’s Jazz and Blues. Eating into the music even more he includes a short Skat pattern towards the end of the song.
Musically the song builds nicely from the solo guitar opening all the way to the point at which the string section kicks in. Each development is understated and fits nicely into the background of the song, almost creeping up on your ears as you listen. It also features a brilliant use of a double vocal with the combination of Jack and a female vocal performed by the talented Fiona Liddell that again feeds into the old school feel but still keeping a contemporary edge to it all.
As well as the Skat section, the song also features a brilliant guitar solo, performed by Jack himself that combines simple multi note picking along with the sweeping strum pluck that allows the player to effortlessly pick multiple notes while still sounding full. Again, all adding and effortlessly moulding into the song with ease. It is clear that a lot of time and effort has been put into the structuring and sound of the track as a whole.
Overall, this track is once again a showcase in the songwriting talent of Jack Hinks, and proves beyond a doubt that he has the ability both as a musician and as a wordsmith to turn his talent to any genre and theme and make it his own. With this track being the first in a run of songs to represent the stages of grief, you can only look forward with anticipation to see and hear what comes next from this stand out singer/songwriter.
