After Life
Life is a game, a sentiment spoken by many people. A sentiment to which Birmingham based Folk/Rock Alternative Troubadours, Saint Alto have fully embraced for their new music video. With the release last month of their eagerly anticipated single, ‘After Life’ the band created a song that encapsulated the tongue in cheek nature of life after death. So naturally, a video that did the same would only be fitting.
After teaming up with mixer Yuuki Matthews (The Shinns) and the producers at Vale Studios, Saint Alto created a double A side single that showcased their versatility and talent for songwriting and composition. While the lead track carried a more familiar Folk/Rock feel with its focus on the big three guitars, bass, and drums. It featured a synth line but more in a supportive role. However the second track embraced a more synth driven sound, creating a very retro, 70’s feeling.
This second track was the one on which the creative force was aimed at and to which the music video was born. Building on its retro noise and the sentiment of life as a game, the band have managed to create something akin to old arcade machines, meets old school sci-fi, with a hint of the Monty Pythons’.
Opening on a background fit for ‘Space Invaders’ a face appears on which the archetype of God’s facial hair has been super imposed. As the lyrics kick in, each band member takes his turn behind the bird, being as expressive as they can, creating a se-real, yet enjoyable visual. Along the bottom of the screen the songs lyrics are printed in arcade lettering, like subtitles to an old RPG. The minimalist use of effects and space, really compliment the style of the track and elevate it into something beyond just a song.
Overall it is an enjoyable video to watch and features some clever imagery and brilliant use of the retro gaming universe. I won’t spoil it all, but the ending of the video very much sums up and once again re firms the sentiment of the song, ‘you only have one life to live, so live it now’.
