Haunting Soul, intertwined with ethereal Pop come together to create another great single from Birmingham based singer/songwriter, Hope Hardy. While her previous singles from her debut album ‘Comfort Blanket’ dealt with the themes of mental health and Hopes own personal story, ‘Midnight Sun’ is a step away from this and takes her writing to a more open plain of themes and feelings reminiscent of classic ghost tales.

With its release on Halloween, the song couldn’t do more to evoke a supernatural landscape of sound. Be it through the use of synths to coat the song in an almost mist like sensation or the powerful yet haunting vocal delivery from Hope herself, the song captures the mood succinctly.

Not being restrained to any particular sentiment or theme the song is free to paint the picture of an almost supernatural experience, akin to that of Wuthering Heights.  However it still manages to keep a contemporary edge, influenced by artists such as Adele and Elisha Keyes. This mix of influences once again helps to elevate the track to a larger audience.

Its supernatural roots are prevalent in the main hook “….We all bow down to the midnight sun….” This once again speaks to a humbler time of classical supernatural storytelling and rituals long forgotten. Whether intentional or not, Hope’s writing evokes this imagery while dancing along the line of reality and imagination. Performing this balance, the song still carries a relatable message, ‘If you can find something to believe in, something to rely on, you will always be able to move forwards’.

Overall this track is a great offering and example of Hope’s songwriting and what to expect when listening to her album. It won’t creep you out, makes no mention of zombies or vampires, and steers clear of any form of monstrous dance moves, but ‘Midnight Sun’ will still tickle that supernatural feeling.
