Morning Midnight

Single Review

By Luke Knowles

Imagine sitting alone on a wooden bench. All around you is the green grass and tall trees of the countryside. In the distance you can hear the crash of the sea against distant cliffs. Above you the sun coasts its way towards the horizon. As you stare at a message on your phone a warm breeze tickles your cheeks and silently you place the phone down and without a word, rise and walk down that beaten path carved by thousands of people before you.  This exact scene painted itself in my head as I listened to the stunningly tender new single, ‘Easy’ from Glasgow duo Morning Midnight.

As songs go ‘Easy’ is like a smooth caramel that simply pours into your ears as you listen. The expansive and yet ever tender synths that form the bed of the track capture a sense of nostalgic warmth. Add to this a perfectly pitched and breathy delivered lead vocal, the track is rich in emotion and texture from stat to finish. The overall sound speaks hugely of legends in Folk Pop like Foy Vance and Passenger. The combination of catchy melody and deeply meaningful lyrics capture the full essence of the song as it explores a very introspective battle that many of us deal with. Who are we and what do we actually want?

One instrument that steals the show on this track though is the warm echoes of the piano. As soon as it kicks in during the first chorus it instantly pulls you in and holds you tight like an old friend. Even as other elements like synths and string sections build, it is a constant that sits beneath everything. This use of a subtle instrument to have a huge impact is for me one of the trademarks of Morning Midnight’s music and not only showcases their songwriting ability but also their deep understanding of their own sound and what they want from their music. This talent alone can be something even seasoned musicians can find hard to master.

Overall, I sometimes find it hard to put into words just how much a song has reached me and it is safe to say that this stunning new single has. It goes to show that even the most subtle of songs and sometimes leave the largest impact on its listener. This is definitely a song that will whisk you away on a warm summers evening and have you reflecting on your own life and where you are now. As I always say though, don’t take my word for it, listen below and see what picture this song paints for you.
